Pros and Cons of Himalayan Salt Lamps

There are different pros and cons of Himalayan salt lamps which I am going to mention here.

Himalayan salt lamps are crystals carved from amber-colored rock salt, hollowed out to fit a light bulb inside. When you light them they give out a warm, reddish-pink glow.

Himalayan salt is rock salt (halite) mined in Punjab region of Pakistan. The salt often has a pinkish tint due to mineral impurities.

It is primarily used as a food additive as table salt.

It is also used as a material for cooking and food presentation, decorative lamps, and spa treatments.

Himalayan salt lamps are decorative lights you can buy for your home.

The salt is marketed with claims that it benefits health, but there is no evidence to support this.

Advocates of salt lamps claim, they can clean the air in home, soothe allergies, boosts mood, help you sleep.

Why do people use it?

Many people choose to buy Himalayan salt lamps simply because they like the way they look and enjoy the ambiance the pink light creates in their homes.

Meanwhile, others find their supposed health benefits alluring.

How does Himalayan salt lamp works?

We know the body needs salt for things like hydration, electrolyte balance, proper blood pressure regulation and for the nervous system.

But all of these benefits come from consuming the salt internally.

Most of us aren’t eating our salt lamps so the benefits come from another property of salt.

Salt is naturally hygroscopic, which means it attracts water molecules to itself. The theory goes that salt lamps attract water molecules in the air.

Water in the air can also hold allergens, pollutants and even bacteria, these substances get attracted to the lamp too.

The heated salt lamp supposedly dries out the water vapor, leaving the particles attached to the salt.

Many sources recommend wiping down the salt lamp with a cloth a few times a week to clean it.

Other sources claim that Himalayan salt lamp benefits are due to the creation of negative ions.

1.Improves air quality

Many people claim that salt lamps purify the air of a person’s home or office.

This is specifically useful to those with allergies to dust, insect droppings, animal dander, or other environmental allergies.

Salt lamps may also benefit people with respiratory problems, such as asthma.

However, there is little evidence to suggest that salt lamps remove allergens or germs from the air. Additionally, there is no concrete proof that salt lamps improve air quality.

2.Helps in boosting the mood

Another frequently made claim is that Himalayan salt lamps can boost your mood.

The exposure to high levels of negative ions in air may improve levels of serotonin, a chemical involved in mood regulation.

The psychological effects of air ionization found no consistent effects on mood or feelings of well-being.

Researchers find that people with depressive symptom, exposed to very high levels of negative ions reported improvements in their mood.

Additionally, it’s very unlikely that salt lamps could expose you to the high number of negative ions used in these studies.

3.Great Night Light and Low-Light Lamp

Salt lamps, on the other hand, offer a warm orange glow, similar to the orange hues found in a campfire or by candlelight.

Himalayan salt lamps are great light source for the evening and people uses it as night light without negatively effecting sleep.

I often wear orange sunglasses at night if I’ll be on the computer or watching a movie to avoid blue light, and we use mostly salt lamps and other low and orange lights after dark for mood lighting.

4.Helps in sleeping

Studies have not yet examined the effects of Himalayan salt lamps on sleep.

However, a review of the effects of air ionization on relaxation and sleep didn’t find any evidence of a beneficial effect.

Thus, even if salt lamps do affect the air environment, it’s not clear if this would have an effect on sleep patterns.

It’s possible that using the dim light from a Himalayan salt lamp may help promote sleepiness toward the end of the day if you use it to replace bright electric lights.

This is because bright light before bed can delay production of the sleep hormone melatonin.

However, this isn’t specific to salt lamps, and the theory hasn’t been tested.

5. Removes asthma and allergy symptoms

Asthma and allergy symptoms such as coughing, sneezing and congestion are usually triggered by inhaled allergens such as dust mites, pollen, pet dander, mold, and more.

And since Himalayan salt lamps purify the air by removing particles of pet dander, dust, mildew, and mold from the air, they can help reduce the symptoms of allergy and asthma.

Cons of Himalayan salt lamps:

1.They can break

White salt lamps are usually marketed as having the purest of vibrations, but they also happen to be the most fragile.

Salt crystals require minerals to help them stay strong and without them, the crystals will become brittle and then shatter.

There are white Himalayan salt lamps, but they are extremely rare and more expensive than the colored ones.

And if you happen to find one that isn’t more pricey than the pink/orange ones, then it is possible that this is a fake.

2.Bulb should be fitted properly

If the bulb rests against the side when inserted, this can cause it to overheat and shatter. To avoid this, be careful it remains positioned correctly when fitted.

3.Himalayan salt lamps are heavy

The more expensive salt lamps tend to be really heavy, especially if you’re going for quality than the more budgeted route.

And if you want to roll with that, then you had best do plenty of heavy lifting. But if you happen to come across a lamp that’s heavy and also lowly-priced, then it’s probably a fake one.

4.Plenty of fake products in the market

One way to spot a fake salt lamp by its opacity.

If you can see a large and even amount of light shining through the lamp all around it, this may mean that it’s fake.

Price can also be an indication of authenticity.

They aren’t very high priced lamps even when real, but if the price is very low, that may mean that it’s fake.

They also absorb water. If you’ve been using your lamp for a few weeks or months and you haven’t seen any moisture come off from it, again, this may mean that it’s fake. However, this would depend on the humidity level of the room that it has been kept and used in.

5.Corrosive nature of salt

Salt lamps leak water when absorbs water vapors, salt from lamp washes down and corrodes surface where lamp is resting.

Summary

While Himalayan salt lamps are nice to look at, they probably do not offer any substantial health benefits beyond helping people relax.

There is little to no evidence to back up claims of air purification, respiratory health, or mood and sleep benefits from salt lamps. Therefore, these claims need further research.

Regardless, a Himalayan salt lamp can provide a nice ambiance to a person’s home or office.
